Guruwalk & Globick
Expanding Beyond Free Tours with Scalable Activity Distribution
GuruWalk is the world’s leading platform for free walking tours, connecting travelers with local guides across more than 800 cities and over 100 countries.
Founded in Valencia in 2017, GuruWalk has built a global community of “gurus” — local guides with deep knowledge and personality — and “walkers”, travelers seeking authentic, accessible cultural experiences.
Its mission is to make culture and history accessible to everyone, creating a more empathetic society through travel experiences. This community-driven approach has been at the core of its rapid international growth.
The Challenge
GuruWalk’s business model has been highly successful, but also structurally limited.
Free tours operate on a pay-what-you-want basis, where the traveler pays nothing upfront and the guide is compensated based on satisfaction, while GuruWalk monetizes through a fixed fee per participant. This model scales effectively in terms of reach and community, but presents limitations in terms of revenue scalability.
At a certain point, GuruWalk identified the need to expand beyond free tours and start offering paid activities and tickets as a complementary service to its core product. This implied a significant shift: moving from a single-product model to a broader marketplace approach, and incorporating a wider range of structured inventory with different pricing models, conditions, and supplier requirements, beyond the logic already in place for free tours.
They explored integrating directly with different suppliers and aggregators, but this approach required multiple integrations and a considerable technical effort. The challenge was clear: how to access a broad and diverse range of activities across the many destinations where they already operate, without adding complexity to their platform.
The Solution
GuruWalk chose to integrate with Globick as a single connectivity layer to access a broad network of activity suppliers.
Through one single integration, they were able to connect their platform to aggregated inventory from providers such as Musement, Civitatis and other ticketing platforms. This allowed them to introduce paid activities for the first time, expanding their portfolio without the need to build and maintain multiple integrations.
A key factor in the decision was not only speed, but also reliability. After evaluating different API options, Globick stood out as the most stable and scalable solution. By working with a unified data structure, GuruWalk avoided adapting its system to each individual supplier and simplified the overall technical architecture.
The Impact
Although still in an early phase, the impact of the integration is already evident.
GuruWalk has successfully evolved from a single-product platform to a hybrid model that combines free tours with paid experiences. They can now access a wide range of activities and bring new products to market quickly, without additional development efforts.
At the same time, the integration has significantly reduced technical complexity, eliminating the need to manage multiple APIs and allowing their team to focus on product and growth.
What started as a complementary initiative has quickly become a strategic evolution.
By incorporating paid activities, GuruWalk is expanding its value proposition and creating new revenue streams, while maintaining its identity as a community-driven platform. The addition of new products enhances the overall user experience and opens new opportunities to engage travelers beyond free tours.
The integration with Globick has not only enabled access to aggregated inventory, but also prepared GuruWalk for the next phase of growth. With the technical foundation already in place, GuruWalk is now ready to activate direct supplier connections and continue expanding its portfolio without additional integrations. This creates a scalable framework that supports long-term growth and flexibility.
Conclusion: Enabling a New Phase of Growth
GuruWalk’s case reflects a broader shift in the tours and activities sector, where platforms increasingly need to combine different types of experiences to grow sustainably.
By integrating with Globick, GuruWalk has been able to expand beyond its original model and introduce new services in a fast and efficient way, without compromising its core identity.
A single integration has allowed them to evolve from a specialized platform into a more scalable and flexible marketplace, ready to support future growth.
